A bathroom has a strange job.
You walk into it carrying whatever is on you, remove much of it with water, soap and friction, and walk out cleaner.
The stuff doesn’t leave with you.
Some goes down the drain. Some lands on the towel. Some ends up on the shower wall, the glass, the sink and the floor. And some of what looks like dirt in a bathroom wasn’t on you at all.
You made it there.
Hard water contains dissolved minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium. When those minerals meet ordinary soap, they can react with it and form an insoluble substance that sticks to shower walls, glass doors and even skin. The U.S. Geological Survey calls the result soap scum.
Think about what just happened. You stepped into the shower with soap and water, two things whose entire reason for being there was to get something clean, and together they helped create a new substance that wasn’t there before.
You made dirt by getting clean.
That may be the most interesting thing about bathroom dirt. A lot of it isn’t simply imported from somewhere else. It’s transformed material.
You can see the difference from house to house. In homes with harder water, shower glass can start showing spots and film quickly, and fixtures collect scale anywhere water repeatedly sits and dries. In another house, you can clean the same kind of shower and barely see that pattern at all. Same room. Same basic routines. Different water.
The water itself is part of what’s making the mess.
Water arrives carrying minerals we can’t see. Leave droplets behind on glass or fixtures and the water evaporates, while some of those minerals stay behind as spots and scale. USGS notes that calcium and magnesium cause most of water’s hardness and scale-forming properties.
Soap starts out as part of the cleaning process and can end up as scum. Oils leave your skin, toothpaste dries around the sink, and shampoo and conditioner rinse out of your hair onto the shower walls, floor and drain.
A bathroom isn’t just collecting dirt. It’s changing things.
By the 1980s, detergent patents were describing hard-water soap deposits as one of soap’s basic drawbacks and explaining why manufacturers had shifted toward synthetic surfactants. One filing describes traditional soap as having two important problems: poor solubility in cold water and the formation of insoluble calcium and magnesium salts in hard water.
So one of the things that changed what we wash with was the stuff washing left behind.
Bathroom-cleaner patents from the same period describe soap scum as water-insoluble calcium and magnesium soaps that cling strongly to tubs, sinks, shower walls and tile. Those filings also explain why acidic cleaning formulations were developed to help loosen and remove those deposits.
Which means the bottle of tub-and-tile cleaner under your sink may be acidic partly because of something soap and water created in the shower.
The room made a problem, and we built a product category to undo it.
That’s part of what makes the bathroom different from most other rooms. An entryway gets dirty because shoes bring the outside in. A kitchen gets dirty because cooking sends grease, crumbs and food around the room.
A bathroom gets dirty while it’s doing exactly what it was built to do.
It takes water, soap, minerals, skin oils, hair, toothpaste, shampoo and everything else involved in getting us clean and turns them into something else: scale, scum, residue, spots, buildup.
The room is a chemistry set with plumbing.
And that changes the way I think about bathroom cleaning. The grime in the shower isn’t necessarily a sign that the bathroom has been neglected. Some of it is the residue of the bathroom working perfectly well.
We go into the bathroom to change the condition of ourselves. The room changes too.
The bathroom gets dirty because it’s where clean gets made.
